Data & the African Diaspora – (3 credit)

Digital surveillance… automated selection algorithms…  predictive policing…  resource allocations by artificial intelligence…  digitally targeted demographics for voter suppression…  machine learning…

What’s it all mean?  How is data used to drive policy, allocate public funds and disenfranchise black communities in America? In this 3-credit, spreadsheet-based course, we examine foundational concepts of data. Students from Morehouse College, Spelman College and Clark Atlanta University are all eligible. There are no prerequisites.

 US Census Data — Honors Independent Study (1 credit)

This 1-credit hour course uses U.S. Census Data to create data visualizations to share across the nation. Together we will (1) identify challenges, (2) work as a team, (3) collaborate with data experts to build our product and solution, and (4) launch our product on Demo Day!

Discover Artificial Intelligence (1 credit)

 Learn to manipulate data to improve Black lives! AUC freshmen, sophomore and juniors can enroll in this 1-credit hour course for a virtual, immersive experience in artificial intelligence (AI) that includes excellent networking opportunities with AI professionals,  a hands-on introduction to computer science and artificial intelligence, ethical issues surrounding AI implementation, and tech careers. Freshmen, sophomore, junior are eligible. You will build a portfolio that is attractive to future mentors and employers. No coding or prior AI experience is necessary.

 Explorations in Data Science (3 credit)

Investigates current real-world applications and careers for data scientists. Explores how data science professionals utilize data science in their research projects and the workplace. Integrates topics in a variety of areas of data science to understand challenges and issues. Topics to be covered include data collection, integration, management, modeling, analysis, visualization, prediction and informed decision making, as well as data security and data privacy. Both R / RStudio and LaTeX will be used. Prerequisites include Calculus 1 and a programming course.
