CAU Summer Virtual Data Science Training, Research, and Education Initiative

Clark Atlanta University

Summer Virtual Undergraduate Education and Research in Data Science Initiative:
Atlanta University Center Undergraduate participants working in min-groups that can support each other will complete three rigorous EdX courses (R Basics, Visualization, and Productivity Tools) selected from HarvardX’s Professional Certificate in Data Science with the learning outcomes outlined above by June 5. We utilize a blended course format to support the undergraduate instruction incorporating the courses from HavardX’s Professional Certificate in Data Science with local instruction utilizing Teams. This will provide the participants with sufficient background in data science to start working with a faculty mentor to develop a research project to be completed by the end of July. While developing and completing their research project, undergraduate participants will complete additional EdX courses, including Probability, Data Wrangling, Linear Regression, Data Set & Research Questions, and Inferencing & Modeling, supporting their research effort. Students must maintain and submit a daily activity log outlining daily goals, material completion, and any challenges that occur. In addition, students will be required to keep a notebook of the significant concepts learned throughout the courses. Students will work in mini-groups as they complete the coursework. Each group will give weekly presentations to the larger student research scholar group. Students will be required to participate in virtual scholarly engagements and social lunches to network. The mini-groups consist of student pairs that will prepare poster presentations periodically throughout the program.
